Ready to make a move? Here are some tried and true tips that are sure to make getting into your new home a snap.

Pack an overnight bag. You’ll want your essentials within easy access, including a change of clothes if you’re going to work the next day as well as all your toiletries. It’s also a great way to transport a laptop, which could run the risk of getting stolen during a move.

Pack what you’ll need first in a clear, plastic container. This includes things like a box cutter, paper towels, trash bags, eating utensils, power strips, phone chargers, toilet paper, tools, etc. The clear bin allows you to see inside.

Wrap breakable items like dishes and glasses in clothing to save on bubble wrap. Need extra padding? Pack glasses and stemware in socks.

Pack plates vertically rather than stacking them. This will prevent breakage.

First things first – clean your bathroom and kitchen thoroughly before you even move in to your new home. Don’t unpack anything into a dirty room.

Use sandwich bags to store small parts of things you take apart like curtain rods, mounted flat screens,etc.

Tape nails and picture hooks to the back of pictures and mirrors.

Take a picture of the wiring for your electronics before you take them apart. You’ll be able to see which plugs go where by following yourphotographic diagram.

Moving to a new home in the same area? Hire a babysitter and pet sitterand keep your children and pets safe and entertained. They should not be at your home when the moving is happening.

Using friends to help you move? The following information may help you stay friends after the move.

Are you planning to donate furniture or other household items? Give friends who help you move first dibs on taking these items.

Make sure you have everything packed before your friends show up to help you move.

If you have a lot of heavy, bulky or fragile items, hire professional movers. Don’t ask your friends to be responsible for your items’ safety.
